More POZ-OR!

In nearly forgot... last week reader How Marvellous sure lived up to his moniker by directing my attention to even more covers by Russian recyclists, the PoZitive Orchestra. So if you can't get enough of them (like me), you'll love these covers of the King of Pop, Deep Purple, Queen(!!), and Tito & Tarantula. I'm trying out a new file host boxstr.com (no relation to box.net, I hope), so let me know if there are any problems. I also re-upped all the covers from the last POZ-OR post, which of course is mandatory listening.

PoZitive Orchestra - Smoke on the Water [originally by Deep Purple]

PoZitive Orchestra - Bad [originally by Michael Jackson]

PoZitive Orchestra - The Show Must Go On [originally by Queen]

PoZitive Orchestra - After Dark [originally by Tito & Tarantula]
You may recognize this song that was featured in a memorable scene from the Robert Rodriguez vampire flick From Dusk Till Dawn. Think Salma Hayek and a snake.

**UPDATE: Boxstr has a 1GB daily bandwidth limit which didn't take too long to exceed, so I'm going to have to figure something else out. For now if you're having download issues, I've uploaded a zip of all 4 covers to Megaupload.

I *loved* your earlier post on the Orchestra! This band is scratching my itch for sure. These new links aren't working for me unfortunately...

Yeah, me neither. It's saying that I don't have your permission or something.

But, I really enjoy enjoy the stuff you do here. Keep it up, mate!

Okie dokie, try it now. I'm still getting used to the ins and outs of boxstr, but I think it should work now. Thanks.

aw, thanks for the mention - it was a pleasure to discover them. After Dark is fine eh - I never got round to the torrent again, so your ups are very welcome.

I remember seeing Dusk til Dawn the first time, knew nothing about the plot beyond some gangster stuff & a few cast names - really quite a shock n puzzle when the tone turned in the roadhouse. I think I had a wise-cracking crook, gritty road movie in my head , no clue beforehand about the vampires.

When I try to download them I get an error message saying bandwith exceeded or somesuch.

Shoot. This boxstr thing isn't going to work out since there's a bandwidth limit of 1GB per day, which clearly isn't enough. Guess it's back to the drawing board... meanwhile I'll try to upload alternate links.

In any case, thanks for introducing us to this awesome band!

Divshare is notorious for deleting files due to copyright.

File distribution services ease the problems that choosing a specific file hoster gives.

If you upload your files through rapidspread.com, it will broadcast your files to 11 different hosts: Uploaded.to, Mediafire, Megaupload, Filefront, Rapidshare, Zippyshare, Zshare, Sendspace, FileFactory, EasyShare, Depositfiles. Wait for the file to be uploaded and you will get a link on rapidspread that users can go to to select any of these 11 hosts to get their file.

Another solid file distribution site is sharebee.com, which actively checks your distributed file over time to make sure that it still exists on the various hosts and removes links if need be. It spreads to Megaupload, Badongo, RapidShare & zSHARE. Badango is a particularly good host since it's widely used in the latin community and has a reputation of hanging on to files forever with no advertising.

Massmirror.com is a redistributer that sends to badongo, rapidshare, megaupload and zshare.
A nifty service that massmirror provides is the ability to distribure files given an URL, so you can squirrel away a web-hosted file for later access even if the original file goes away.

If you are going to choose a single hosting service, I recommend these in the listed order:

rapidshare
badongo
megaupload
mediafire

Paying for an account for rapidshare gives unlimited downloads for your files. I know that users complain about the wait time between downloads, but jez, the account is cheap to buy and really is the best around and will keep your files forever.

I don't like zshare.com, it loses files and many times won't give you files it thinks it has.

A new hoster worth checking out is http://rghost.ru/. It's a Ruby on Rails site that allows you to add HTML to the page, sort of making it like a blog post.
It also displays file details such as media tags, bitrates & duration, dimensions, you name it. Media players are provided for all media types: audio, video, and documents. This is a very slick implementation.

Also check out drop.io, it's very sophisticated (email uploads, voicemail, blogging, etc)

NOTE: When you use the file distribution services it would be wise to copy the links that the various hosts make for you in case the file distribution service goes away or loses your distribution page. This way you can post the list of urls explicitly where your uploaded file can be found.

This comment is completely off topic to this post. About a year ago you did a post about covers of the Beck classic Tropicalia. You had a rather scathing review of a band called The Smiling Salami's. I was wondering where you got the mp3, and if you send me a copy of it. I was in the Smiling Salami's, it was actually my very first band, nearly 10 years ago.

thanks

Rickdog: thanks for all that info. I recognize sharebee/badongo so I might go that route. I think rapidshare would be unwieldy for individual songs as opposed to huge zipped files. Ideally I've been trying to find a place that offers direct links and gets picked up by Hype Machine and Elbo.ws, but it's such a hassle I may just forsake that.
